The site is the location of the United Lampblack Company which made fine carbon powder for making carbon paper, rubber tyres, records, photocopier toner, lamp black amongst a variety of other uses. The Columbia Carbon Works supplied the carbon black to both GEC and laterly when owned and operated by Ever Ready Carbide Tools the site was used for the manufacturing of carbon sticks used in the batteries and employed a large number of local workers.

Today the site is used by tenants for a variety of businesses ranging from welding to recycling.
